Call for Submissions

The International Conference on Ecology and Transportation (IENE) invites abstracts/proposals for its 2026 conference, bringing together researchers, practitioners, policymakers and infrastructure operators working at the intersection of nature and linear infrastructure.

IENE is an international network and conference series dedicated to understanding and addressing the ecological and social impacts of roads, railways, pipelines and power lines.

The conference provides a focused forum for advancing evidence, policy and practice on ecological fragmentation, connectivity, wildlife–infrastructure interactions and the long-term sustainability of transport and infrastructure systems.

Contributions outside this scope will not be considered.

Strategic Conference Themes

IENE 2026 will focus on how infrastructure can be planned, delivered and managed to work with nature rather than against it, through four strategic themes.

These themes help create a cohesive and balanced conference while leaving room for creativity and innovative approaches.

If your session spans multiple themes, that’s great - interdisciplinary and cross‑sector abstracts/proposals are strongly encouraged!

The Value of Nature

Placing ecological and social value at the heart of infrastructure decision-making, and critically assessing investment, valuation and nature-based approaches.

Resilience Through Nature

Strengthening climate resilience by working with ecosystem processes, while recognising ecological limits, thresholds and risks of maladaptation.

Pace over Perfection

Scaling proven solutions to reduce fragmentation and severance at landscape and network scales, balancing urgency with ecological integrity.

Creating Actionable Knowledge

Utilising foundational knowledge to address ecological severance at a landscape scale, supporting more connected habitats and informed restoration planning.

Why submit an abstract/proposal?

By proposing a session, you can:

  • Highlight emerging insights and drive forward-thinking conversations
  • Bring together experts around critical issues or new frontiers
  • Influence the direction of the conference and contribute to a diverse, impactful programme
  • Raise the visibility of your work, project, or network on an international stage

What we're looking for

Session abstracts/proposals should include:

  • A clear and engaging session title
  • Session type (click here for more details)
  • A concise abstract/proposal outlining the session’s objectives and expected outcomes
  • Whether your session is:
  • Closed: focused on pre‑identified presentations, or
  • Open: allowing additional contributions to be selected by the Programme Committee

Please note: all presentations, including those in closed sessions, must be submitted as separate abstract/proposals for review.

What you need to know...

Your submission

When submitting an abstract/proposal, contributors will:

  • Rank how their work aligns with each of the four conference themes
  • Select five keywords (plus up to five optional additional keywords)

This helps us curate coherent sessions, highlight emerging patterns, and identify where targeted invitations may enrich the programme.

Who can make a submission

We welcome submissions from academics, infrastructure agencies, consultants, NGOs, policymakers and practitioners working on roads, railways, pipelines, power lines and associated linear infrastructure. Contributions may be empirical, theoretical, methodological or applied, and may address ecological, social, economic or governance dimensions, provided they are grounded in ecological evidence and long-term sustainability challenges.

Session types

We welcome a wide range of session formats (details here) - from traditional presentations to workshops, panel discussions, and interactive or experimental formats.

If you have an idea for something different, we encourage you to propose it. The Programme Committee is open to innovative formats that deepen engagement and spark meaningful dialogue.

How your submission will be reviewed

All abstracts/proposals will be evaluated by the Programme Committee with support from a wider pool of expert reviewers. We are using Oxford Abstracts as our submission and review platform to ensure a smooth, transparent, and fair process.

Be part of the Conversation

This is your opportunity to help shape the themes, discussions, and outcomes of the IENE Conference. By contributing a session, you’re helping build a programme that reflects the most pressing challenges and the most exciting innovations in the field.

We look forward to receiving your ideas and working together to create an inspiring and impactful event.

Please note: You will need to login or create a free account to submit an abstract/proposal in Oxford Abstracts.

IENE Special Issue

IENE is preparing its next Special Issue on Infrastructure and Ecology with the journal of Nature Conservation, Pensoft Publishers

The Special issue will feature the themes discussed at the IENE 2024 (https://www.iene2024.info/) and IENE 2026, but also welcome papers on related topics.

Please consider this opportunity when preparing and submitting your abstract - and stay tuned for the upcoming call!
